ABOUT JOHN SHEDD

BACKGROUND:
John Shedd received his BFA in Ceramics from Rockford College in Illinois. He completed his graduate studies and received an MFA in ceramics from Rochester Institute of Technology in New York in 1977.

Since its origin in 1979, Clayphernlia gallery, now John Shedd Designs, has resided in a 200 year old converted mill in historic Rocky Hill, New Jersey. The gallery, which adjoins a working studio , displays works made in the studio as well as selected works from other artists.

John's work has also been featured in many individual and group shows and is exhibited in shops and galleries nationally.

"I have been drawn to the exploration of glazes and Ceramic surface decoration for more than thirty years. Within the demanding limitations of that Study, I have found a reserve of directions abundant enough to last for a lifetime. Progress in this work
is measured in the opulent bounty of that rare piece that withstands the challenge of fire and atmosphere, to become a surface rich in color, intensity, and texture. The truly successful attempt avoids the temptation of artifice or illustration. Moreover, it must be the honest embodiment of the beauty inherent in a natural material."

OVERVIEW
Every individual should have access to art and culture in their daily lives. It's our goal to provide a medium between art enthusiasts and the artists themselves.

From the outset, our project's goal was to enable visitors to not only understand the art we display, but also to generate group discussions about the pieces as a way to bring culture into one's valuable leisure time. We have forged many partnerships over the years and obtained many patrons who support this initiative.

Our diverse, friendly team is interested in learning about what each of our visitors want to discover - whether they are young, old, big or small - let's get to know each other!
